I first saw this video a few weeks ago, and I’ve been waiting until the new site was ready before posting it. It comes from a series by Agency Charlie documenting the lives of various San Francisco inhabitants, with this particular one focussing on artist Mike Giant.
Giant, who also has a history in architecture, shares his thoughts and philosophies on design in his own unique way, allowing us an insight into the mind, and the studio, of an intriguing graphic artist. Although initial impressions suggest an aloof and carefree character, rare moments of austerity reveal a driven and dedicated craftsman, who is deadly serious about his work.
I found the film strangely hypnotic and compulsive, returning to it on more than one occasion to relive his refreshing perspective.
Making art isn’t making good use of your time as far as our culture is concerned…something you do on weekends as a hobby, you don’t do it for a job. But if you do it for a job, and you do it well, they love you. It’s like, you’ve got balls, you’ve figured it out, the secret.
